I Finally Found the Meaning of My Name, Holly 🌿✨

For most of my childhood, everyone called me Oge.
“Holly?” That was technically my name, but honestly, I never really paid much attention to it. 😂
It was not until I was registering for JAMB and needed my birth certificate that I had one of those, “Wait… so my name is actually Holly?” moments. 😭😂
I knew, of course. But somehow, it never felt like my name.
When I got into university, I decided, “You know what? I am going to start answering Holly.” And that was how Holly slowly became the name people knew me by.
My dad always told me that Holly was a name given to a baby girl born in December. 🎄 Since I was born in December, it made sense.
But there was always something about the name that I did not fully understand.
I had heard the name Holly used by different people, even popular personalities, and sometimes I wondered, “What exactly does this name mean?” 😂
So whenever people asked me, I simply said:
“It is a name from the holly tree, usually associated with Christmas and December.” 🎄🌿
Then I came to Germany.
One winter day, while taking a walk, I saw it.
The Holly tree. 🌿
And something clicked.
It was winter, yet this tree was still standing. Still green. Still beautiful. Still full of life. It had these beautiful berries, and while so many other trees had lost their leaves, the holly tree was still there, looking strong. 🍃❤️
I went home and started researching the name again.
And suddenly, I saw my name differently.
The holly is an evergreen tree. It remains green throughout the seasons. It does not simply disappear when winter comes. It stands through changing weather and changing seasons.
And I thought…
God, is this why this name is mine? 🥹
Because when I look at my life, I see seasons.
There have been beautiful seasons. There have been painful ones. Seasons where I felt strong and seasons where I wondered how I would keep going.
But somehow, I am still standing.
Still growing.
Still believing.
Still becoming.
Still Holly. 🌿✨
Maybe my dad simply heard the name from someone and thought, “That is a beautiful name.” 😂
But perhaps God had a bigger picture in mind.
Because now, when someone asks me what my name means, I no longer simply say, “It is a Christmas tree.”
I say:
Holly is an evergreen. A tree that remains. A tree that stands through the seasons. 🌿
And honestly, that feels like a little reminder from God about who He has called me to be.
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.”
Psalm 92:12 🌱
Through every season, may I remain rooted.
Through every storm, may I remain standing.
Through every winter, may I still carry life. ❄️🌿
Maybe I did not choose the name Holly.
Maybe the name found me. ❤️
And now, I finally understand why I love it. ✨
P.S. If you have a baby girl born in December, you officially have my permission to name her Holly. 😅🤭 May she grow like an evergreen too. 🌿
